According to the most recent overview of the orchid flora of Indochina (Seidenfaden 1992) about 335 species are known to occur in Laos. Considering the orchid richness of the neighbouring countries it seems safe to estimate that more than 800 species may eventually be recorded from Laos. The following checklist of 808 taxa enumerates not only species currently known from Laos but also those that, based on knowledge about their distribution and ecology, may be expected to be found there in the future. These are marked with *. Those marked with % are taxa occurring in Laos but not listed as such in Seidenfaden (1992); these new records for the orchid flora of Laos were partly scanned from recent literature, but most are due to our own explorations.
