Product Description

Dendrobium findlayanum var. oculatum (3.5" pot robust blooming size)
This species from Southeast Asia has a similar look to Den. wardianum except that the colors on the segments are more blended and the lip has a striking single deep purple “eye” spot in the lip. The flowers are long lasting and lightly fragrant. The plants have a curious “string of beads” look as each stem node is markedly swollen, so they are quite interesting even when out of bloom. Grow this plant in fairly bright light, and provide plenty of water and regular fertilizer while growing from spring to fall, then cut way back and allow the plants to experience nights at least in the 50’s during the winter months in order to set bloom. Like other species in this group, this orchid can even withstand light frosts. So, many people who don’t have greenhouses leave their plants outside until freezes are predicted, then move them to an unheated sun porch, garage window or basement window where they will continue to stay cool until blooming. We leave our plants in the greenhouse since we keep it at 55 at night during the cooler months, but move them up higher where we will keep the water away from them and they can get good bright light. If you live in Central or South Florida, or Southern California, plants could stay outside year round unless a rare hard freeze is predicted. The effort put into grow this species well is richly rewarded! These are impressive blooming size plants in 3.5” pots with many canes that could be stepped up to a larger basket if you prefer. Just remember that Dendrobiums tend to prefer a tight pot and bloom better that way. NOTE: This is a deciduous to semi-deciduous orchid that naturally drops its leaves during the winter rest period.
